Moonlord’s Level 65 Passive Ability, Magic Boost has received much attention since its effect was changed in Dragon Nest Korea, April this year. The article is written by Sieg to explain Moonlord’s Magic Boost effect and the limit in raids.
A short history – This 2x (P/MDMG limit) and 50x (total damage) limit was first introduced in Desert Dragon Nest (DDN). Practically, there have been very few people, if any, to ever witness the 50x cap. The culprit is glaringly obvious of course – elemental resist. With the originally pretty absurd elemental resistance in DDN, there simply wasn’t enough elemental resist reduction to even use that as a practical damage tool to hit the 50x cap.
This 2x cap pretty much crushed Crusaders’ DPS output in DDN. While no official statement was given, it was pretty much not likely for any class aside from Crusaders at 60 cap to reach the 2x cap unless a party was specifically aiming to. This cap is limited by your BASE DMG * (1+% from gear), up to a limit of +100% from skills/buffs, which is where the 2x comes from. A non-exhaustive list of skills that affect this cap:
– Any 65 Passive that adds +% DMG （Yes, even after Crusader’s 65 passive revamp, which states weapon damage instead of magic damage, it’s still under the 2x cap)
– Long/Short/Crossbow Mastery
– Battle Howl
– Sylph’s Aid
– Grudge Formation
– Judge’s Power
– Rock of Blessing Buff
70 Cap introduced the (un)holy beast that started making all of this a problem for others – Bringers. Healing of Chakra +46.8% (48.6% with +1 ring)
Some of the more notable class revamped skills ARE INCLUDED WITHIN this 2x cap as well, namely Moonlord’s 65 passive and Engineer’s Mechanic Mode.
This was not an issue in Dragon Nest CN intially because our version of Black Dragon Nest (BDN) had not included a 2x cap at the start, and it was delayed after Bringer was released. When was it added to CDN? 2 weeks after the Moonlord revamp.
The classes who have their DPS most restricted by the 2x cap – Crusader, Moonlord, Barbarian (to a lesser extent).
The following reference highlights how this cap works for Moonlords.
With just Battle Howl + ML’s 65 passive, he 2x capped his MDMG without even using Brave. Take note that this MIGHT NOT BE TRUE for all MLs. This is because Battle Howl gives an absolute increase in DMG, and not a % increase. With a low base DMG, the increase from Battle Howl expressed as a % is RELATIVELY LARGE.

Even with 70S accessories and 60L sword, his Moonlord’s highest MDMG in a raid is 75728, lower than many other classes’ DMG in town. We can see that he is using a Dark Manticore gauntlet. If this was changed for a 60L gauntlet, would the absolute value difference be much larger? Yes. However, his DPS would drop significantly, since that 38% dark just cannot be replaced by MDMG.
Now, I have no idea what the first BDN screenshot he places there is meant to refer to, but looking at the numbers, we can tell that certain… accidents took place during a run, drastically skewing the results from the DPS parser.

Inquis and Light Fury dealt more than twice of a dark ML. Even Soul Eater, a much… ostracised class in general, dealt around 9% more damage than the Moonlord. o.O That Adept’s gear must be crazy though. Sharp-eyed people will of course have noted that Barbarians didn’t rank that well, similar to my own runs.
Enough of the story… the concept of this limit for Moonlord is simple.
MDMG = Base MDMG * (1+% from gear) * (1+% from passives/buffs)
In any raid where the purple icon (indicating the 2x/50x cap) is visible when selecting the option to enter the nest
MDMG = Base MDMG + (1+% from gear) * (1+maximum 100% from passives/buffs)
Therefore, the raw MDMG from ML’s 65 passive is converted into an appropriate % of (Base MDMG * [1+% from gear]) and contributes to the 100% cap in the same way as Battle Howl.
To REDUCE the effect of your 65 passive as a % of your MDMG, your options are
1. To increase your MDMG without a corresponding increase in INT that will equal or exceed the %
2. To increase +MDMG% from gear
No.2 is not very practical in an elemental laden cap. Any MDMG increase from doing this will NOT OFFSET the DPS LOSS from dropping +Dark % in favour of +MDMG%.
No.1 means to be using +MDMG third stats on plates, talismans and jades over +INT (though I believe FD and Critical are too important for many MLs) and to ENHANCE YOUR WEAPON. A high enhancement of your weapon is your best shot at reducing the limitations cast upon you by your 65 passive… it is a very expensive endeavour though. (Correspondingly, those with low weapon enhancement values will feel the limitation much more keenly).
In other words, other than being damage capped too easily raid-wise, a non-tuhao Moonlord’s impact in damage-capped RAIDS is MUCH MORE LIMITED compared to a Tuhao after the introduction of this 65 passive revamp. (Outside of raids, it’s a major boost in general for all MLs of course) This is because most Moonlords will have much closer INT (from jades and accessories) than MDMG. This of course also means that the gap is relatively smaller outside of raids, since the common player’s INT will grant them a relatively larger % boost to their MDMG.
